• Do all my documents need to be translated into Portuguese?

  Not necessarily. The requirement depends on the type of document, the visa category and the authority handling your application. Some documents in English may be accepted without translation, while others may need to be translated and certified. Always check the current checklist and instructions for the consulate or visa authority responsible for your application.

• What type of translation does Portugal require?

  Portugal does not use a “sworn translator” system in exactly the same way as some other countries. Depending on the procedure, the receiving authority may require a Portuguese translation that has been certified through an accepted route, such as certification by a Portuguese lawyer, solicitor or notary. A standard US certified translation or notarised translation is not automatically accepted, so confirm the required format before ordering the service.

• Can a US-based translator prepare the translation?

  Possibly. A US-based translator or agency may prepare the translation, but the final document may still need to be certified through a route accepted by the Portuguese authority. Our service can help coordinate the translation with local certification support in Portugal, where required.

• Do I need an apostille as well as a translation?

  These are separate requirements. An apostille authenticates the signature or seal on a public document; it does not translate the document or certify the accuracy of its translation. Whether an apostille is required depends on the document and the authority receiving it.

• Should I obtain the apostille before arranging the translation?

  In many cases, it is advisable to obtain the final apostille first and then have the complete document translated, including the apostille and any relevant seals or endorsements. However, applicants should confirm the required procedure before starting, especially if the document is subject to a strict validity period.

• Does the translator need to be based in Portugal?

  Not necessarily. What matters is whether the translation and its certification meet the requirements of the authority handling the application. A Portugal-based translator or Portuguese legal professional may be required for certain certification procedures, so this should be confirmed in advance.

• Does the translation need to be in European Portuguese?

  The translation should be prepared in the variety of Portuguese required by the receiving authority—normally European Portuguese for documents submitted in Portugal. Terminology, names, dates and personal details should also be checked carefully for consistency across the application.

• How long does a translation take?

  Turnaround depends on the number, length and format of the documents, as well as any certification required. Applicants should allow extra time for apostilles, certification, corrections and possible requests for additional documents. Starting early can help prevent translation from delaying the application.

• How long is a translation valid?

  A translation does not necessarily expire on a fixed date. However, the original document may have to be recently issued or valid on the date of submission. If the original is replaced, updated or rejected, the translation may also need to be revised or prepared again.
