Meet Your Instructor

I’m Maria Virgínia Barros.

Over the years, I’ve worked as a language specialist, refining my translation and subtitling skills for clients who want their international videos to connect across cultures.

For me, successful subtitling means the viewer forgets they’re reading and simply experiences the story.

My love of poetry, which I explore on my blog Sítio da Saudade, has sharpened my attention to detail and my commitment to finding the perfect turn of phrase.

Subtitles, when done effectively, become a seamless layer, allowing viewers to fully absorb the content, whether it’s a film’s atmosphere or a training’s insights.

That’s why I developed these online courses: to share what I’ve learned and help you build a rewarding career in this creative, dynamic field.

Master in AI, Translation and New Tech for Audiovisual Translation

This three-month professional Master’s program teaches you how to combine traditional AVT expertise with AI, automation, and project management skills that companies actually need right now.

Vertical videos - Maria Virgínia Barros

(EN) Vertical Videos: Captioning and Subtitling for Social Media

Short, mobile-first content like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts is how millions of people connect, learn, and have fun.

However, vertical video subtitling is an art form with unique guidelines, not just a straightforward transcription process.

We’ll explore  specific techniques for optimizing text for mobile viewing, from condensing and segmentating content for quick reads to perfecting character limitsline counts, and visual elements like colorfont, and alignment.

This course will equip you with the necessary skills to improve viewer retention by using Subtitle Edit, a widely recognized industry tool, to style, time, and burn-in subtitles.
